cast iron camping cookware sets

Cast iron cookware has been a perennial survivor for hundreds of years. Even nowadays, with all the lighter non-stick alternatives, cast iron pans and skillets are often preferred by many. You might be wondering why – they are heavy, they get hot slower, and you shouldn’t clean them with detergents.

What gives, then? The answer is relatively easy – durability, heat retention, very high-temperature tolerance, and renewable non-stick surface. The iron-carbon alloy used for the production of cast iron has proven its usefulness over and over again. While cast iron cookware is fit for stovetops, one of its better purposes is being used out in the open, on a campfire.

Choosing the right cast iron camping cookware can be a daunting task. With so many options, there is simply no way to pick out the best alone. But do not fret – we have done our research, and we’re here to show you the best – and only the best. Without further ado, let’s jump right into our list.

How to Re-season Your Cast Iron Cookware?

Re-seasoning your cast iron cookware doesn’t have to be hard and complicated. After relentless research, we found out that flaxseed oil is the best for the task at hand. Simply put a spoon of flaxseed inside the pan and wipe it around the whole surface with a paper towel.

Then, wipe away all the oil with another, clean paper towel. Don’t worry, this just removes the leftover oil. The cast iron surface is uneven and a bit porous, so it keeps the oil it needs. When you’re done, put the pan in a cold oven, upside down. Put a small tray or a piece of tinfoil below to gather any oil that might drip from the cast iron item.

Put your oven on maximum power and give your cast iron utensil an hour inside. Turn off the oven and let the pan cool off on its own. That’s it, you have a brand new non-stick layer of seasoning!

How Long Can Cast Iron Cookware be Used?

The answer to this question depends on how diligent you are. If you wash the pans with warm water and without detergents, if you don’t scrub too hard, if you apply a thin layer of vegetable oil after completely drying your cast iron pan… it will last you for a lifetime.

If your children do the same, it will last them for a lifetime. There is no definitive answer, we just know that cast iron cookware can be used pretty much until it’s forcefully broken or destroyed.

Is Cast Iron the Best Material for Camping Cookware?

Absolutely. The heat retention of cast iron is unbeatable. It can be used directly on the fire. It will not break, nor will it crack or melt. Just be careful with using acidic foods inside.

A few minutes won’t hurt, but boiling the whole tomato pasta sauce for half an hour can do some damage to the seasoning. And remember – never leave the cast iron pan in water and always dry it as best as you can.

The best camping cookware sets are made of cast iron. They are durable, retain heat for longer times, and are easy to clean. Contrary to popular belief, they are also easy to maintain. So don’t overthink your decision – grab a cast iron cooking set today and rediscover the joy of cooking under the starry sky. You won’t ever regret your decision, we promise.
